Exploring the Art of Books
This project represents a collaboration between Waterford Libraries, Waterford Gallery of Art and artist Eliza de Beer. It encourages the public to delve into and explore the beauty of our library services and books in general.
Elize de Beer is an artist and bookbinder. She practices varying art forms that include printmaking, drawing, collage and book arts. Through print, artist books and sculptures she explores the greater concepts and concerns around books, their use and access of knowledge; further examining public library spaces and archiving practices. In her current body of work de Beer explores the aesthetics and concepts around libraries and archives.
This initiative aims to achieve the following aims:
- Waterford Libraries will work with de Beer to commission an exhibition of large pop-up books – these will be displayed in The Index Gallery, Central Library.
- Luke Currall, Visual Arts Co-Ordinator with Waterford City & County Council Arts Office will work with de Beer to devise a series of artist facilitated workshops with different audiences.
- The workshops will be held in Waterford Gallery of Art and Central Library.
- The workshops will engage participants to explore themes and perspectives centred on books, libraries, and access to knowledge.
The specifics of workshops will be advertised in Waterford Libraries and Waterford Gallery of Art social media, where the public can book a free spot to engage with a workshop of interest.
