Members of the community will be invited to a willow weaving workshop in the Ringfort of Dún na Sí. The existing ringfort surround is being replaced with a wall made from weaved growing willow.

Dún na Sí in Moate, Westmeath will be working with students from the local primary and secondary schools, members of the local Men’s Shed and other local community groups with Irish Basket Weavers Association (IBA) on a series of workshops. The aim of the IBA is to keep the craft of willow weaving alive. This project will see a number of workshops organised which will be led by Pauline from the IBA who will educate the groups on the benefits and versatility of willow. They will then proceed to prepare the ground, plant the willow and be shown how to weave it in a way that it will grow into a fully weave ringfort surround. This is a very large area to plant.

This project aims to get the local community of Moate involved in a much-needed project of replacing the ringfort wall. The goal is to replace the wall with a permanent solution that aids soil and air quality and is beneficial for the environment.
