Tullamore Town in the 1960’s: A Decade of Innovation and Improvement

The 1960s has been marked as a great improving decade in Ireland – a time of innovation and welcome change after a difficult 1950s. Tullamore participated very much through its existing and new firms, new shopping and commerce, a first town plan, provision of new infrastructure. The groundwork was laid for new medical services.  The era of television and entertainment created huge awareness. The question is how did change come about? What creative steps were needed? In this project, Offaly Historical Society seek to showcase in a new publication how Tullamore town handled the sixties in terms of innovation, improvement and  disappointments. This publication will concentrate on creativity and leadership. The review is a team effort from fifteen contributors in the wider community with twenty-four essays. These will be fully illustrated. It was a remarkable period in Ireland and Tullamore was very much a participant in the process. The new publication will be launched in early October 2024 at Tullamore Historical Society.
