Music-making at Kippure Direct Provision Centre

The young people in residence in Kippure Village Direct Provision have very limited opportunities to engage in creative or cultural activities due to the remoteness of its geographical location. Many of them have described feelings and experiences such as the shrinking of their material and cultural world as well as a lack of agency and opportunity which is particularly magnified by the location of their direct provision accommodation.(Irish Refugee Council's "Tight Spaces," 2023) 

Building upon a GMC Beats collaboration with Music Generation Wicklow, supported by Wicklow Arts Office, for Cruinniú na nÓg earlier this year, Music Generation Wicklow returned to Kippure Village to deliver a series of instrumental and/or vocal performance music education sessions with young residents. 

The project's focuses on providing instrumental and/or choral opportunities and aims to improve their well-being and create a sense of community within this context. It aligns with the values and missions of Music Generation Ireland by offering performance music education and experiences which exemplify the inclusivity, diversity, and transformative power of music that Music Generation Ireland promotes. It also supports the mission of the Wicklow Arts Office to enhance well-being and promote the arts in the community by using music as a tool for personal growth and community building.
