Gus Lynott Exhibition

The proposal is to fund a high-quality major retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Gus Lynott in 2023 in the Ballina Civic Offices, under the auspices of Ballina Arts Centre.
Gus Lynott, who lives with bipolar disorder, is an artist who, for over 30 years, has produced a remarkable body of work. However, he has rarely exhibited beyond Co. Mayo, and only ever in group shows. This is an opportunity to appropriately celebrate Gus Lynott’s long artistic career in the region, in a large enough space to accommodate a significant selection from his extensive body of work. It is also an opportunity to creatively engage with audiences both local and further afield in an accessible and insightful way within the context of creativity and mental health, including a programme of guided exhibition tours and talks.

The high-profile exhibition and symposium will explore both the artist himself, and also the mental health issues involved. There has been considerable commitment to the project, from established Mayo artist Ian Wieczorek; RHA Director Patrick T. Murphy; psychoanalyst and writer Dr. Medb Ruane; and art historian, curator and critical writer Catherine Marshall. It is envisaged that this initial exhibition will open the opportunity to bring Gus’ work further afield, the recognised line-up of individuals and organisations involved and the quality of the proposal reinforcing Mayo’s reputation as a centre of innovative creativity and ambition.
