The Fishermen of Wexford

A diverse group of volunteers with Wexford Tidy Towns will work with artist Helen McLean to design and create a large new mosaic inspired by the John Boyle O’Reilly poem ‘The Fishermen of Wexford’. The group includes people who have made Wexford their home in recent years, enjoying the increased health benefits of living near the coast, some fleeing from war and tragedy, and some seeking new opportunities. Throughout the creative process positivity, wellbeing and togetherness will be fostered within the group.

The mosaic will be displayed at the Wexford Quay Crescent area and will depict Wexford’s historic and ongoing relationship to fishing and the unpredictable nature of the sea. Using waterproof glass and ceramic pieces mounted on cement panels supported by steel frames, the image will highlight the themes of community and climate change.

This placemaking project will furthering the Wexford community’s sense of pride and belonging whenever the colourful image of local folklore and history is encountered. It will add to the identity of the Quay Crescent area, and open up new opportunities for the expression of the character of Wexford Town.

This project is being co-funded by WWETB and Wexford Tidy Towns.
