1993 - 2023: 30 Years since Ireland's De-Criminalisation of the LGBTI+ Community

AMACH! LGBTI+ Galway wishes to commemorate and celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland.

Following a successful case by Senator David Norris in the European Court of Human Rights and intensive campaigning by the LGBT+ community, in June 1993 the Irish Government repealed laws which criminialised consensual same-sex activity on the basis of equality.

AMACH! LGBTI+ Galway wishes to commemorate this important milestone for the LGBTI+ community with a series of LGBTI+ community based workshops, an archive film screening of the Galway Pride parade from 1993 with guest speakers as well as offering a public exhibition to run concurrently with Galway Community Pride Festival in August 2023.

The workshops will be facilitated by community artists, exploring the themes of equality, human rights, celebrating historical milestones for the LGBTI+ community and expression of current inequities still experienced by the LGBTI+ community.

The film screening and exhibition will be open to the public for the wider Galway city community, they will offer an opportunity for everyone to learn about the rich history and vibrancy of the LGBTI+ community here in Galway.
