The Gweedore Sheep War

The Sheep War began on 10/12/1856 when an estimated 40 young men entered the house of a Scottish shepherd in the isolated mountain area of Altan. What followed was a time of great unrest in North West Donegal which led to a select Committee hearing in the House of Commons.

Saturday 12th August @ 6pm:  Join us for an evening of talks which will focus on the events that led to the Sheep War and the ensuing unrest. The guest speakers will deliver talks on what Gweedore and Cloughaneely was like prior to the 1850’s, the first resident landlords in the Dunlewey area, Sir James Dombrain and Lord George Hill and the events of the Sheep War itself.

Location: Ionad Pobail Dhún Lúiche F92 PK22

Sunday 13th August @ 11:00am:  Join us on a guided walk to Altan, and hear about the history of the building.  Registration at the Ionad Pobail in Dhún Lúiche, transfer to Mín na gCappóg to start walk into Altan.  Followed by refreshments back in Dún Lúiche.
