Battle of the Books

This collaboration with Sligo Tidy Towns, Garavogue Resident’s Group, Town Regeneration and Park’s Department, will engage a writer to compile a narrative explaining the story of The Battle of the Books. These narratives will tell the story of The Battle of the Books and will be displayed beside each mural. Sligo County Council previously engaged a mural artist to install a mural as a current day depiction of the Battle of The Books. This is in a prominent position along the Garavogue river on a retaining wall of Garavogue Villas, known as Riverside. QR Codes added to the narratives will bring families to information on UN Sustainable Development Goals, symbols for which are hidden in the murals for a fun and educational activity. This will be used as a teaching aid for the many students who come to the area for nature walks. It will provide information to residents  and visitors, drawing attention to the unique landscape and historic environment in line with the strategic priority of Creative Place. The addition of symbols for UN Sustainable Development Goals to the mural, with QR codes for information will augment the project to support our strategic priority of Climate, Biodiversity and Environment. Working with Parks Department, a planting scheme for each section of wall between each mural will be devised. The Battle of the Books (Battle of Cúl Dreimhne), the first case of copyright, took place close to Drumcliffe in Co Sligo.
