Slievenamon 1848 Commemoration

This two day event is a re-enactment of the monster meeting held on Slievenamon 175 years ago and begins on the Saturday 15th July at 8pm in Kilcash Community Centre with a Lecture on Young Ireland and the 1848 Rising by Dr Thomas McGrath, a re-enactment  of the speeches of the 1848 leaders by actors in period costume followed by a Music session in Kehoe’s Lounge.

An action packed second day on Sunday 16th begins at 12 noon in Kilcash village where music entertains the assembling crowds who depart the village at 12.30 led by flag bearers carrying the Irish Tricolour to the Slievenamon summit where as a symbol of peace between the Nationalist and Unionist communities it was flown in 1848.

A summit re-enactment of the 1848 meeting will take place where we intend to video the various speakers and assembled multitudes which we hope will arrive in period costume as the Tricolour is again unfurled at Meagher’s Rock.

The summit party will return to the village where in their absence music and entertainment has continued and art exhibits relating to the history and folklore of the mountain by the ten schools surrounding Slievenamon are on display. The summit party adds to the drama by performing a further re-enactment of events on the mountain for those who were unable to ascend the slopes.
