High up within the bell tower of St. Mary's is Offaly's oldest complete turret clock. Installed around 1820, when a new church replaced its medieval predecessor, this fascinating feat of mechanical engineering was made by the well known firm, Sharp of Dublin. The clock design is called a birdcage movement and is the only surviving example in County Offaly. Since its installation approx 200 years ago, it has regulated the social, commercial and religious rhythm of the wider Shinrone community. Indeed, for many this clock was the only means of telling time until pocket watches became more affordable.

St. Mary's Church of Ireland in partnership with Shinrone Heritage Group and Nigel Barnes (one of Ireland's few remaining horologists) are aiming to put the tick tock back into the community clock. The projects journey will be the focus of a public talk during Heritage Week 2023.
