The Word/Online - John Minihan: Sligo is a literary town

Exhibition of the John Minihan collection held by Sligo Libraries.

Photographer John Minihan was born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, Co Kildare. He moved to London at the age of 12 and became an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At just 21 years, he was the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard.

The collection captures John Minihan’s style using a Nikon camera, black and white film, and Kodak gelatin paper. Nurturing and promoting a love of literature is at the core of the work of Sligo Libraries. The unique landscape and heritage of Sligo continues to inspire writers. Creativity generates from the energy of Sligo’s landscape; sandy beaches, Atlantic ocean, woods, lakes, rivers, mountains, fairy forts and megalithic burial grounds. The stories associated with the Mountain ranges, including the distinctive Knocknarea, with Queen Maeve’s burial mound, and Benbulbin, formed when glaciers moved cutting its shape during the ice age, contribute to the unique energy that continues to inspire creativity for those lucky enough to experience this beautiful landscape.

The exhibition features writers photographed in Sligo by John Minihan in 2022; Kevin Barry, Louise Kennedy, Una Mannion, Eoin McNamee, Susan McKay, Alice Lyons and John Kavanagh.
