The Children of Carrowbrowne exhibition is a set of portraits by award-winning documentary photographer, Tamara Eckhardt.  As Ireland’s only indigenous ethnic minority group with a distinct and rich nomadic culture, Travellers are often faced with discrimination, pushed to the periphery of urban spaces. On the outskirts of Galway, situated right next to the city dump is the Carrowbrowne Halting Site. This is home to eight Traveller families. The Children of Carrowbrowne offers a glimpse into the Traveller children’s daily lives in their home environment.

Tamara Eckhardt, born in 1995, based in Berlin, works as a portrait and documentary photographer all over Europe and further afield. Her work is primarily concerned with marginalized social groups and minorities – with a particular focus on documenting adolescence. Since 2022 she is a member of the highly regarded OSTKREUZ Agency.

Her analogue photography sheds a kindly light on her subjects whom she follows up on for months at a time for each project. Eckhardt’s expressive portraits give the viewer an intimate insight into the lives of youth in Germany and Ireland.

The Children of Carrowbrowne exhibition is a co-curation between Galway City Museum and Tamara Eckhardt. It formed part of GIAF 2022 Visual Arts Programme.  The outdoor element of this exhibition will remain in situ at Galway City Museum for the duration of 2022.
