Ballybricken Spoken Word Project
Stephen James Smith is a Dublin poet and playwright central to the rise of the vibrant spoken word scene in Ireland today. To date, his poetry videos have amassed over 3 million views online. Stephen has been conducting poetry workshops in secondary schools and community groups across Ireland for a number of years.
Working with Stephen, the Transition Year pupils of Our Lady of Mercy and Mount Sion CBS, schools based in Ballybricken area of Waterford City, will create a piece of spoken word on the theme of their home town in the context of climate change. Students will explore their ideas and feelings on climate change and express them through a spoken word performance. Young people are very aware of the challenges of climate action but many may feel they are powerless to respond. This project aims to develop creativity and to build confidence in young people to take action on climate.
Workshops will take place in Sept and Oct 2022 culminating in a performance in Waterford City (Theatre Royal or Garter Lane) to align with Imagination Festival. Details of the performance will be updated in October.
