Conversations in Portrait
Conversations in Portrait creates an authentic cultural experience for older people and their families – without leaving home. The project explores themes around generosity, dialogue and offers people access and engagement to culture at a time when it is most needed.
The portraits are created over several virtual sittings using Zoom. When the paintings are finished the artist posts them to the sitter.
The process of making the paintings, which involves long chats about all sorts of different subjects, is as important as the finished paintings, and it adds a unique element to each of the artworks. The sitters are very engaged and keen to find out about the different stages of making the pictures and are active collaborators in the process.
The portraits are a lasting record of a moment in time and a defiantly optimistic gesture by both artist and sitters at this strange time.
