A Basket Full of Memories and Customs
The Corryeolus Women’s Group hosted by Breffni Family Resource Centre are working with Helena Golden on a new project, A Basket Full of Memories and Customs. A creative, explorative journey through the monthly and seasonal traditions and customs of Ireland to develop and weave a series of Willow basketry items representative of cherished aspects of Irish life and culture.
As we slowly and cautiously emerge from a period of great uncertainty, this project seeks to focus on customs and traditions that offer comfort and security as the group work with Helena Golden, Basket-maker to learn the traditional craft of Willow Weaving and create a series of pieces that depict the changing months and seasons through the platform of willow weaving.
Overall, this project will bring people together and help overcome that fear and disinterest in socialising that has crept in. It will help combat the sense of isolation by bringing people together for a productive and shared interest in a relaxed, therapeutic project. Each person will learn a new skill, share ideas, develop their creativity, work towards a common goal of creating an exhibition of the work produced and ultimately have a bounty of hand woven items to pass onto future generations, each item depicting an aspect of life that is of significance to the participant.
