This historical book details the history of Leitir Cornmill, of a small country corn mill located one kilometre East of Kilcar village. It is intended that the publication will increase the awareness and the importance of this mill and its traditions, culture and history of Southwest Donegal. The objectives of this publication are: To safeguard and document the wealth of oral history relating to the mill and its operation, and to make such information available to the general public. The book will give an insight to an age when corn mills formed an integral part of the country’s agricultural life. A time, when at least from October to the end of April or the beginning of May the corn mill was at the core of the farming community’s priorities and was a hive of agricultural activity. The mill and kiln are undoubtedly of immense cultural and industrial significance not only to South West area but to the County. The information forming the basis of the published history of the mill will be chiefly be gathered and collated locally by Kilcar native Michael Ward. As a child, Michael’s family were the owners of the mill and, uniquely, he himself has a wealth of information on the traditional methods used in the operation of the facility. He has donated the mill, millers house and mill lands to the Kilcar community. The ongoing restoration works will see the conversion of the Mill Building into a first-rate Heritage Tourism facility.
