Railways of Donegal Heritage Trail
Today there are still traces of the railway heritage structures across the County, including station buildings, bridges, railway cottages, former trackways, as well as some railway stock and artefacts. Organisations like the Donegal Railway Heritage have a focus in rescuing, preserving, researching, educating, engaging and celebrating our unique Donegal railway heritage.
With this in mind, through the Culture and Creativity Grant Scheme we will produce a quality printed guide for schools, locals and visitors alike, identifying where in Donegal people can still explore and appreciate this unique heritage. For schools, the guide will provide a very useful and informative tool in our school outreach programmes, for educating young people about an important part of Donegal’s cultural heritage. This guide will include a map of the county and interesting facts, and would be available across the county, and available to download.
Presently, no county railway heritage pocket or online guide exists, yet schools, locals as well as visitors continually ask for this information. Current guides do not highlight any of these heritage locations hidden in plain sight! Outside of meeting visitor’s needs, as importantly, the guide would encourage local people to seek out our hidden railway heritage which is all around us. These new materials will encourage this community engagement for these stories to be told, and recorded for the first time.
