Carrickmacross Toy Library
The first dedicated toy library in Ireland, which officially opened in September 2020, serves families and caregivers of children age 0-6 in Carrickmacross and surrounding areas. They are physically closed at present, but started an interim delivery service in February 2021 which has proved a big hit.
90% of toys are plastic and an overwhelming proportion of these are not recyclable, so they inevitably end up in landfill or worse, washed up on beaches. The group's overriding aim is to discourage excessive consumption, and if/when parents do buy, that they make considered purchases. They have over 200 toys in the collection at present; around 75% of these are pre-loved, sourced via donation or picked up from local charity shops. When they do buy toys new, they carefully consider the origin and brand ethos/commitment to sustainability.
Another key aim is to encourage play and for parents/caregivers to interact with their children. They do not purchase toys with batteries or screens and are huge fans of open-ended play. They want to introduce parents to brands and types of play they might not have known about previously. The group is 100% volunteer-led and a registered charity.
Creative Monaghan Team is collaborating with The Toy Library in the purchasing of eco friendly toys which will enable children and families to borrow and engage in new creative games.
