Royal Hotel – Greer MacKeogh Artist Commission/Exhibition
The Hotel is a collaboration between the artist as ‘guest’ and the Boyle community as ‘host’, to draw together a portrait of the Royal Hotel, past and present.
The ‘Royal’ closed in 2012 after 230 years in operation, but will reopen as a community space in 2022.
A period of research and development by the artist, funded by Create in 2018/19, laid the groundwork for this project. It led to a framework for a collaborative process of producing the artwork.
The Hotel’s outcome will be a site-specific, collaborative artwork for the opening of the Royal in 2022, made up of stories and images shared by the community, and the artist’s own response to her experiences in Boyle. It is about sharing experiences of hospitality, in a time when many rural hotels across Ireland have closed or been repurposed.
To that effect the project will continue to support cultural infrastructure in the county to enable improved access to and participation in cultural activities.
