Blue Raincoat Theatre "The Flight of Diarmuid and Grainne"
The Flight of Diarmuid and Grainne will involve the creation of a large-scale bas-relief sand sculpture/drawing themed on the mythological flight of Diarmuid and Grainne, from the armies and reach of the ageing king Fionn MacCumhaill. The drawing will be created in a unique arts participatory project involving eight professional artists and 80 people drawn from the community of north Sligo. The art piece – drawn, combed and bas-relief – will be constructed from the natural tidal sand on the beach, by community group members and volunteers in co-operation with up to eight professional artists, across a large uninterrupted area of the isolated Cliffoney Beach in north Sligo. As the drawing will be created over the course of a full day between low and high tides, it will involve a significant social gathering and occasion for families and community groups taking part, bringing the entire community together in an arts/landscape participatory project.
