In Waterford, the West Waterford Brigade engaged British forces from January 1920 onwards. The East Waterford Brigade with the assistance of members of the West Waterford Brigade took part in the Tramore Ambush at Pickardstown in January 2021 when the East and West Waterford Sinn Fein Brigades combined forces to feign an attack on the RIC barracks in Tramore to draw soldiers from Waterford. The arrival of the troops was to be met with a surprise ambush, but an early shot warned of the plot. The skirmish that followed saw two volunteers killed and attempts by others to escape. The Volunteers who died were Tom O’Brien and Michael McGrath.

In January 2021, Tramore Heritage will honour those who took part in the Pickardstown Ambush and mark the occasion of the centenary. Dr Patrick McCarthy, author of The Irish Civil War 1913-23 (Published by Four Courts) will be the keynote speaker for the commemoration at the Pickardstown Commemorative Shrine in Tramore. The Commemoration will be respectful and dignified with emphasis placed on the efforts of those who fought for Irish independence while at the same time being careful to be fully inclusive of all members of the Waterford and Tramore communities. The City of Waterford Brass Band and the De La Salle Pipe Band will assist on the day of the Commemoration. The Pickardstown Commemoration events will begin in August 2020 during heritage week. Further educational programmes will be provided for local schools and information booklets.
